Haven Primary School was VPM’s first project, which started in 1997. The school provides nursery and primary education which is open to all children in Korogocho’s slums.  As well as meeting educational needs, the project also provides a feeding programme and acts as a rehabilitation centre for destitute children, orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDs.

Haven Childrens Centre was VPM’s first project, which started in 1997. V.P.M. Haven children centre is running well and is growing considerably. We now have 486 children in eleven classes from Baby class to Standard Six. Two new teachers have joined our school this year, Mr George Odera and Miss Florence Atieno. We now have ten qualified teaching staff in total, who work hard to impart knowledge to the children. Mr Caleb Omollo is the current headteacher and he has worked hard to maintain discipline in the school, which has led to a notable improvement in academic standards.

We offer free education to children who are orphans, street children or from extremely poor families living on less than a dollar a day. The parents who can afford to pay some little fees, pay one pound a month to help with the running costs of the school. During the school holidays, tuition continues, covering topics from the previous term in order to help children who have been left behind in their learning.

The school feeding programme provides free lunches for all the children in the school from Monday to Friday. As the dining hall is relatively small, most classes eat their porridge in their classrooms, however baby class and pre-units eat in the dining hall to make sure they don’t burn themselves with hot meals. Although the cost of food has gone up, every effort is being made to ensure that the programme is maintained.

Thanks :  We are grateful to all those who have supported the school in so many ways over the years.

Needs : Increased support is needed for the school feeding programme. Food prices are rising and it is becoming increasingly difficult to provide the children with their one good meal a day and their staple porridge. We also need writing materials, uniforms and shoes.
